Urban India is undergoing significant transformations in different dimensions. These developments have dramatically transformed once familiar and cherished landscapes into unrecognisable uniformity for those of an older generation, for recorders of history, and for storytellers of the past. Amid the current jumble of sameness, there still stand the showstoppers of the past—architectural reminders of an aesthetic that has endured through the changing times. Among the visibly monumental and extant examples, precious little gems exist, frequently hidden behind a mass of humanity or haphazard construction but which, if and when discovered give you that sudden uplifting moment. The book Jali, Lattice of Divine Light in Mughal Architecture—a showstopper in itself—captures these very moments of beauty that nourish the soul in the diminishing aesthetics of the rapidly changing landscape of India.
