About the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA)

Established in 1976, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA, is a premier Institute of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, for research and capacity building for the urban sector in India. NIUA’s broad objective is to bridge the gap between research and practice on issues related to urbanisation. For more than 40 years now, NIUA has been the vanguard for contributing to and building the urban narrative for a fast-evolving Urban India. The Institution has been actively working on bringing forth key areas of concern for urban India to build the urban discourse at various urban scales. It has utilised its competencies in research, knowledge management, policy advocacy and capacity building to address urban challenges and continuously strives to develop sustainable, inclusive, and productive urban ecosystems in the country. It has emerged as a thought leader and knowledge hub for urban development in India and is sought out by both Indian and International organisations for collaborations and partnerships in India’s urban transforming journey. NIUA is committed towards aligning its efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through all its initiatives and programs.

Intenship Description:

National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), is seeking a Urban Planing Intern with a background in Urban Design or Urban Planning. There is a lot of opportunity to collaborate, learn and ideate, as well as interact with many partners. Potential candidates should be interested in research and publications under the urban, climate and gender lens. Proficiency in software like InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is a must. Designing infographics is an additional asset.

Responsibilities 

  • Research and design support for knowledge products of NIUA
  • Design thinking for publications and other modes of presentation
  • Ideating on new projects in the pipeline
  • Coordination and collaboration with internal and external partners
  • Design collaterals for partnering events
  • Creating databases and repositories for the Various projects of NIUA
  • Collect and analyze data related to land use, demographics, transportation, and infrastructure.
  • Assist in preparing reports, maps, and visual presentations to support planning projects.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: 0-2 years
  • Qualification: preferably Urban Design or Urban Planning or any other design education equipped with technical knowledge of climate action and urban development
  • Software knowledge: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva, Microsoft Office, and Rhino
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic understanding of urban planning principles and regulations is a plus.
