About Us

Cities in India are increasingly plagued by multiple issues related to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). The growing pressure on resources due to rampant urbanization has led to challenges of service delivery and poor living conditions. The Resources and Waste team at the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) has been extensively involved in the WASH sector. The team works with a range of stakeholder and partners to build knowledge and strengthen capacities across three sectors: Solid Waste Management, Used Water and Septage Management, and Urban Water Management. The main objective is the mainstreaming of sustainable resources and waste management practices in Indian cities.

Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot in India (SCIAP)
“Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot in India” is one of the projects funded under GEF’s Sustainable Cities Programme in the GEF 6 cycle. The aim of the project is to integrate sustainable strategies into urban planning and management to create a favourable environment for investment in infrastructure and service delivery, thus building resilience of pilot cities.
Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge (SSC)
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, launched a National Competition titled ‘Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge’. The Challenge, aptly launched on World Toilet Day, aims to prevent ‘hazardous cleaning’ of sewers and septic tanks and promote their mechanized cleaning.
Swacch Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U)
India's growing population, coupled with rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, has been putting a strain on the country's resources. The urban growth in India is faster than the average for the country and far higher for urban areas over rural. With rapid urbanisation, the country is facing massive waste management challenge.
