A museum breathing on the bank of a dying river

“Let the river roll which way it is; Cities will rise on its bank” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

We have heard this and witnessed it too, sometimes through pages of our history books while sometimes through stories of our grandparents. We have seen rivers roar, we have seen them keep quiet, we have seen them meander through the mountains, we have seen them still on the plains, but why do we have to see them die???

Child in the city: Can my child play?

Often, I wonder if my little 2-year-old Shaisha would be happier if given an opportunity to play with other toddlers, if she’ll learn things faster, maybe learn a trick or two from her playdates. I would love to have my daughter run around a park with other children while I can have one free moment just by myself. Then, it strikes me that isn’t this a very basic requirement for a child to play in the open space, and yet I am sitting here looking at it as a distant dream. Now, it’s your chance to wonder ‘why’? Well, there are NO PARKS in our neighbourhood.

Child in the city: Can we go for a walk?

Good morning, I am Radha, mother of one-year-old Kaira. The doctor suggested me to give her sun exposure as sunlight exposure has a lot of health benefits for infants. It helps the body to produce vitamin D that helps the body to absorb calcium and strengthens bones thereby preventing rickets in children. Since we live in the housing tower, we merely get the sunlight on our balcony; that is why Kaira and I decided to take a walk to the park, which is five minutes away from our house. We were looking to get some good sunlight and fresh air.

Child in the city: Is this Play?

What do these words mean? Little Ansh did not have the foggiest idea. Two young, bearded men in kurtas, stood across the road. The midday sun was out and Ansh, a 5-year-old with beady eyes and curly hair, was standing in his familiar playground. When they came close, he heard the one without camera muttering these lines.

“Violence is a culture found in playgrounds. Cities fail to let their children breath.”

Child in the city: A walk to remember

Hi, I am Anuja, a 3-year-old kid. It was a sunny Sunday and my dad decided to take me for a walk to a big playground where we were going to play with Frisbee. I was too excited to explore the city and felt like my favorite cartoon character ‘Dora- the explorer’. We started to walk towards the playground, which is 20 minutes away from our house. Initially, we did not find any space to walk on the streets because it is full of cars and bikes, and very seldomly when we did find a footpath it was mostly encroached by vehicles.
