City Water Resilient Planning

TITLE

Implementation of City Water Resilience Approach (CWRA) in the Vishakhapatnam

Dec 2021, 15 – Jan 2021, 17
Completed
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Urban areas are increasingly facing water crises (e.g., flood risk, drought, storm surge, and sea-level rise, increasing water scarcity, degrading ecosystem, and depleting freshwater resources). The resilience approach is widely accepted in urban planning process in making cities water resilient. This has accelerated the need for innovative approaches and tools that can guide cities to develop water resilience, to adapt, and cope up with such water related hazards. The ARUP, Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), The Rockefeller Foundation, and The Resilience Shift have developed a tool to addresses this issue. It is a stakeholder-led approach that enables city to take a holistic view of their water systems, inform decision-makers of a strategy to take forward, and collaboratively build resilience to local water challenges. Through its application, cities would be able to develop a water resilience action plan/strategy, strengthen their existing water and climate programmes.

The Sustainability Resilience Unit (SRU) established at the Greater Vishakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) showed interest to pilot test the CWRA in Vizag city.

Highlights / Unique Features

The CWRA is prepared by step by step process, first city’s water management system is mapped and the resilience status is assessed using set of qualitative indicators with help of relevant stakeholders in a consultative process. This is used to identify gaps and prepare the problem statements and prioritize solutions/activities/actions for the gaps identified using the CWRF indicators.
