ClimateSmart Cities Alliance

BACKGROUND

Combating climate change is neither simple nor can it be the responsibility or ability of one organization. More so when one is talking at the national level and regarding all cities across diverse conditions. The assessment framework will have continued activities in both tracks, viz. conducting the bi-annual assessment and refinement of the indicators, and guidance assistance for actual mitigation and adaptation actions that are required for cities to undertake to improve their performance constantly, which is the larger purpose.

It is to be be well understood that climate change impacts are cross-cutting and complex, and steps towards their improvement need to be broad-based and with long-term planning. This alliance aims to broad base a city’s efforts towards climate awareness, planning & action, and ensure its overall sustainability for posterity. Improvements in the assessment would be a by-product of such an endeavour. In this direction, the Ministry has envisaged a ‘ClimateSmart Cities Alliance’ for a collaborative effort at all levels of government and among all stakeholders to implement climate action.

Objectives

To create an inclusive dialogue and broad-based, collaborative action on climate change via ClimateSmart Cities Assessment Framework. To deliberate on actions and changes at the national level as well as actual mitigation and adaptation actions that are required for cities to undertake to improve their performance.

Role

NOTE

The above roles and contributions are voluntary. The intention is to engage technically, and not for any particular business purposes. The cities are also further advised to form a “Climate Alliance” for their cities, which will bring together diverse local skills, strengths and resources required for planned climate action. Organizations are encouraged to ask their local offices and representatives to be part of the same.
