The core objective of RCA is to provide the member cities with a platform to discuss and exchange information on aspects that are vital for sustainable management of urban rivers.

The supplementary objective of RCA is for NMCG, NIUA and partners to provide dedicated technical and handholding support to the member cities as they implement interventions for river-sensitive development.

The purpose of this Sponsored Thesis Competition is to invite students to align their academic thesis projects with the theme 'Re-imagining Urban Rivers'. The competition aspires to provide students with an opportunity to design blue sky and innovative solutions, for re-imagining the outlook and management of rivers that flow through Indian cities. The competition is organised by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the National Institute for Urban Affairs (NIUA), under a joint project to promulgate river-sensitive development in Indian cities. The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) have prepared Strategic Guidelines for "Making River-Sensitive Master Plans'', intended to help city planners understand how to integrate river-sensitive thinking into a Master Plan. Join us for an extensive two day training programme centered on this notion. This training program is to build the capacities of interested stakeholders in the knowledge and application of these guidelines. Participate by submitting your CV along with a letter of interest, latest by 24th June 2022, at urvers@niua.org. Participants will be issued a certificate upon successful completion of the training.

Managing urban rivers in a holistic manner is a relatively new and evolving field in India. Until now, the emphasis has solely been on controlling pollution. While this is undoubtedly important, there are several other environmental, economic and social aspects that need to be considered as well. To address this gap, in November 2020, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) developed a unique framework for managing urban river stretches called the Urban River Management Plan (URMP) framework. It is expected that a number of cities will adopt this framework to prepare their city-specific URMPs in the next few years. This training program is to build the capacities of interested stakeholders in the knowledge and application of this framework.

This is a very exciting time for urban water management and sanitation sectors in India. Sanitation, in this context, includes both solid and liquid waste management. With the launch of the Jal Jeevan Urban and Swachh Bharat 2.0 missions, the stage is now set for widespread action on the ground. The knowledge and awareness on these sectors have increased by leaps and bounds in the last few years. The purpose of this brainstorming roundtable is to discuss contemporary and state-of-the-art solutions and modalities for managing these sectors in the next few years.

The NMCG project team at NIUA is happy to invite you to the *Ganga Utsav 2020*. The event is an ongoing 3 day virtual (online) celebration, marking the importance of rejuvenation and replenishment of the rivers. Grand Finale of the event on 4th November 2020, Wednesday, 11:30 to 14:10 hrs, is having a series of releases and launch of publications. These are expected to be hosted in the gracious presence of Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Minister of Jal Shakti; Shri Rattan Lal Kataria, MoS, Ministry of Jal Shakti; H.E. Ambassador of Germany; and Sh. Hitesh Vaidya, Director NIUA. Amongst these, the NMCG Project team will be presenting the following: 1/ A unique framework for managing urban river stretches in the Ganga Basin - *Urban River Management Plan (URMP)*. 2/ A knowledge product to improve an understanding about the river-city interactions - *Comparison and Contrast of River Consideration in the Master Plans of Selected Cities*. 3/ A dedicated website developed as a one-stop destination for knowledge on urban river management - *Re-Imagining Urban Rivers*.
