The Morgenstadt Global Smart City Initiative (MGSCI) is a project launched in three global cities – Kochi (India), Saltillo (Mexico) and Piura (Peru) under the International Climate Protection Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). It is coordinated by the University of Stuttgart in cooperation with Fraunhofer Institute(s), and with NIUA and Centre for Heritage and Development (C-HED) as its local partners. The project is a three-year collaboration developed under the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation. It aims to set up a Smart City Innovation Lab to identify and implement sustainable cross-sectoral solutions in the sectors of Housing and built environment, Energy, and Water and Sanitation. MGSCI is developed using the morgenstadt methodology, a multidisciplinary survey and analysis technique, which enables complex urban systems to be analyzed and the resulting knowledge to be applied for the development of integrated concepts and innovative solutions for sustainable cities.
