As you are aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to  the fore the urban inequalities and other related challenges around poverty, climate change and a range of other socio-economic fragilities that are often explained as ‘urban penalty’. The rising concerns about the impact of COVID-19 on urban life have increasingly led to discussions on urban inequalities and the potential challenges in different parts of the world and from different disciplines. Yet, there is little holistic knowledge on the various dimensions (social, economic, spatial, and cultural) and multiple forms of inequalities (income, spatial, access to basic services, access to human capital opportunity) and direct and indirect effects of post-COVID urban divides in cities.

In this regard, a one day event aims to deliberate on rethinking cities and urban policy responses in the post COVID-19 world. The outcomes of these deliberations will form an advisory document and a suggested road map on contemplating urban precarity in post COVID era.

The National Institute of Urban Affairs, and the UNESCO Cluster Office for Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka are jointly organising a special edition of webinars, in collaboration with the Metropolis, and the Centre for Heritage Conservation-CEPT Research and Development Foundation, Ahmedabad, to mark the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO Recommendation on Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), adopted on 10 November 2011 by the UNESCO General Conference. The UNESCO Recommendation addresses the need to better integrate and frame urban heritage conservation strategies within the larger goals of overall sustainable development, in order to support public and private actions aimed at preserving and enhancing the quality of the human environment. These webinars will showcase some of the international best practices of adoption of HUL approaches and other examples of urban heritage management, along with discussion sessions on the opportunities and challenges cities face while implementing the HUL approach or conserving their urban heritage.

NIUA is organising an online strategy meeting, with national nodal training institutes, to explore avenues for Collaboration under the Sanitation Capacity Building Platform (SCBP). NIUA aims to collaborate with credible nodal training institutes for Upscaling of Capacity Building on Non-sewered Sanitation at the national level. Over the past 5 years, SCBP has developed as a credible platform including, 30+ partners from National Faecal Sludge and Septage Management Alliance (NFSSMA), around 15+ Nodal National Training Institutes, 9 universities partners, and around 15+ sector experts as knowledge partners. To mark 45th Anniversary, NIUA has planned a series of events from 23rd to 29th June including the launch of new knowledge products, and websites. NIUA was established in 1975 as an autonomous organisation of the Ministry of Works and Housing. The Institute initiated the task of bridging the gap between researchers and practitioners in the field of urban and regional development, and provided guidance on policy and programme orientation of urban research in India. World Environment Day 2021 will be celebrated on 5th June 2021 across the world. The theme of World Environment Day 2021 is 'Ecosystem Restoration'. Ecosystem Restoration denotes assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded by activities like pollution and deforestation. Prototyping and gathering user feedback are common design strategies which are increasingly being applied in public projects as well. As design thinking is gradually being adopted as an integral aspect of governance, quick pilot projects have proven effective strategies to arrive at what might work and what might not. However, anticipating failures and embracing mistakes is not an easy task where public funds are concerned, and pilots are still a relatively new approach to large scale projects. How can urban design projects benefit from designing pilots and what have been the experiences of sectoral experts, is what the webinar aims to discuss. From tactical urbanism for testing public response to interventions in public spaces to prototypes of essential products and services, the discussion hopes to cover a broad wide array of pilot projects at different scales and spread over different durations. What have been various lessons from different pilot projects to scale up solutions, what were the surprises, what were the half formed ideas that never took off, what role do data and documentation play in iterative design processes, are some of the topics of discussion.

As India is preparing to unlock itself, phase wise, it is now increasingly clear that, our cities need to be prepared to handle COVID risks for a longer horizon. In order to live with the potential COVID risks, our cities need to initiate actions towards Safe Social Distancing (SSD) protocols, SSD signages, COVID risk sensitive urban design, WASH Infrastructure and strategies for urban spacing out and monitoring of the COVID Point of Interest (COVID- POIs) in our cities. A SSD guidebook has been developed by Dr. Saswat Bandyopadhyay, a lead Professor of Urban planning in Ahmedabad and a team of multi- disciplinary professionals, to support cities to develop city specific COVID safe strategies and actions to Live Back Better! This guidebook has gone through extensive review of protocols and guidelines of Ministry of Health, WHO and UNICEF as well as by drawing various Asian and global good practices.
